Last month our children had the pleasure of playing their first game of basketball on their new court. As they descended on the ground it was a particularly special moment to all of us at Rafiki Mwema and many back in Western Australia. These courts were born out of great generosity in an immense time of grief. They were made possible with thanks to the family of former Western Australian basketball player Anthony Exeter who tragically and unexpectedly lost his life in 2019.
Generosity in a time of grief
A greatly respected and admired basketball player, Anthony was an inaugural member of the Rockingham Flames in the State Basketball League. Being named State Basketball League Rookie of the Year (1995) and the League’s most valuable player (2000) were just two of his many achievements.
When Anthony tragically passed away two and a half years ago his wife, Kelly Exeter, asked if rather than flowers, donations could be given to Rafiki Mwema in honour of her husband. She said that “being a dad was Ant’s favourite thing” and that’s why she did this in memory of him. On choosing Rafiki Mwema Kelly said:
“All Ant ever wanted from life was to be a dad and he was amazing at it. In being an amazing dad, Ant provided a safe space for our kids to grow up in. The kind of safe space every kid *should* have, but not all do. Rafiki Mwema is an organisation that provides a safe space for children in Kenya who need it.”
Basketball courts to honour a great man
As a result, we had an outpouring of donations. These were accompanied by many beautiful messages which were all sent to Kelly and her family. The donations amounted to an amazing grand total of $8,593. This amount allowed us to build a new basketball court on our farm in remembrance of Anthony with remaining funds being dedicated to support our operational costs at the farm. The special area has two brand new hoops and stands. It also proudly displays a plaque to remember him forever as a part of our family.
The basketball courts will provide endless hours of enjoyment for our Rafiki kids. They provide the opportunity to laugh and heal through play while strengthening the connections between our children.
