At Rafiki Mwema, we believe that caring for children begins with caring for the people who walk alongside them every day. Late this year, our Kenya-based team were given the opportunity to step away from the intensity of their daily work and enjoy a well-deserved staff excursion — a time intentionally set aside for rest, reflection, and reconnection.
A Beautiful Setting for Renewal
The excursion took place at Angani Resort and Spa, nestled in the scenic mountains of Subukia Sub-County, Nakuru County. Set at the edge of the Subukia Escarpment and just below the Catholic Shrine, the resort offered breathtaking views, fresh mountain air, and a peaceful environment — the perfect backdrop for renewal.
With access to a swimming pool, spa facilities, comfortable guest rooms, and open spaces to gather and relax, Angani provided more than just a venue; it created space for our team to slow down and simply be.
Day One: Rest, Laughter and Connection
Over two days, staff attended in groups to ensure care at the centre continued uninterrupted.
On the first day, the team enjoyed swimming, shared meals, and relaxed conversations. Morning tea included local favourites like sweet potatoes, mandazi, and smokies, followed by a generous buffet lunch of vegetable soup, beef, chicken, assorted vegetables, and soda.
The atmosphere was light and joyful — a day marked by laughter, bonding, and the simple but powerful gift of rest.
Day Two: Challenge, Faith and Team Building
On the second day, the remaining group enjoyed the same warm hospitality and meals, alongside meaningful shared experiences. A highlight was the visit to the Catholic Shrine, where staff climbed the mountain following the Stations of the Cross — a physically demanding yet deeply fulfilling journey.
The visit to the shrine and holy water pool became a moment of spiritual reflection for many, offering time to pause, give thanks, and reflect on the year that has been.
Team-building activities throughout the day brought plenty of laughter and strengthened relationships, reminding everyone that they are not walking this journey alone.

Working in child protection and trauma recovery is deeply meaningful — and deeply demanding. This excursion was more than a “day out”; it was an investment in the emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing of our team.
When staff are supported, refreshed, and connected, they are better equipped to provide safe, compassionate, and consistent care to the children at Rafiki Mwema Therapeutic Centre.
