“Another day, another energy, another chance to change a life.” These words from our team in Kenya perfectly capture the heart of what we do at Rafiki Mtaani. Each morning brings fresh possibilities to transform lives, and we never take that responsibility lightly.
Our Mtaani family represents some of the most vulnerable members of Kenyan society—street children and families who face unimaginable hardships daily. But what makes our work truly special is understanding that our impact extends far beyond providing meals. We’re building relationships, restoring dignity, and creating pathways to brighter futures.
Let us share with you what’s been happening with our street family and how your support continues to make extraordinary things possible.
Yesterday’s Triumph: Proving Every Doubt Wrong
Our Mtaani family recently had the honour of participating in celebrations for the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. When we announced that we’d be bringing members of our street families to this significant event, some expressed concern about whether they would behave appropriately in such a formal setting.
Their doubts couldn’t have been more wrong.
From beginning to end, our family members carried themselves with remarkable discipline and respect. There were no incidents, no negative reports—just genuine pride in seeing how beautifully they represented themselves and our program. The event concluded successfully, and we returned to our downtown base to share lunch together before everyone dispersed to their respective locations.
This moment represents something profound about what we do at Rafiki Mtaani. When street families receive proper support and care, they can integrate positively into wider society. They don’t need pity—they need opportunity, respect, and someone who believes in their potential.
Building Community Through Sport and Connection
Our daily activities go far beyond providing meals, though nutrition remains fundamental to everything we do. On our recent Thursday session, we focused on football instead of our usual dance program. Why? We’re preparing for an upcoming friendly match and wanted to begin selecting a passionate, skilled team to represent Rafiki Mtaani going forward.
The enthusiasm, especially among our younger members, was infectious. Watching them play with such joy and determination reminds us that childhood resilience can flourish even in the most challenging circumstances. We’re confident we’re building a strong, vibrant youth team that will represent our values of community, respect, and hope.
While football was taking place, one of our older boys generously offered haircuts to those who needed them—something he does whenever the opportunity arises. Others engaged in card games, draughts, or simply rested in a safe space where they knew they were welcome.

The Power of Shared Stories
When activities paused for our daily group session, we invited several individuals to share uplifting messages. Uncle Jack spoke about the importance of health and well-being, promising to conduct an educational movie session the following week after missing the previous one due to the national event.
These moments of connection and learning are precious. They represent what makes Rafiki Mtaani unique—we’re not just feeding bodies; we’re nourishing souls, minds, and spirits. Every conversation, every shared meal, every moment of recognition contributes to rebuilding dignity and hope.
We also took time to thank our family for their exemplary behaviour during the trafficking awareness event. Recognising their achievements and encouraging them to maintain that positive spirit reinforces the values we nurture through our program.
What Your Support Really Means
When you support Rafiki Mtaani, you’re investing in comprehensive care that addresses the whole person. Our dedicated staff ensures daily check-ins, provides medical assistance when needed, and supports various needs that arise. We facilitate activities like beading, painting, soccer, and reading—creating opportunities for joy, creativity, and learning.
The statistics tell part of our story: 100 meals per day, 700 meals every week, and over 133,784 meals served to date. We’ve helped 58 individuals integrate back into stable housing. But numbers only capture part of our impact.
The real transformation happens in moments like yesterday’s event, where our family members proved their worth and dignity. It happens during football matches where young people experience the joy of teamwork. It occurs during quiet conversations where someone feels heard and valued for the first time in years.
The Reality of Street Life
Life on the streets in Kenya is harsh beyond imagination. Street children and families are often treated as outcasts, living in constant fear. They face violence from authorities, struggle to access medical care, and battle daily for basic survival needs.
Our work began after a shocking reminder of these realities in 2019, when a 13-year-old boy was killed for stealing a small amount of money to survive. This tragedy galvanised our community, with our older children sacrificing their own pleasures to fund what started as a weekly meal program.
COVID-19 intensified these challenges dramatically. Lockdowns closed hotels, food shops, and markets, eliminating the few opportunities street children had to earn money for food. Local authorities responded with violence, beating vulnerable children for not adhering to pandemic measures they had no way of following safely.
More Than Survival: Building Futures
Rafiki Mtaani evolved from emergency response to comprehensive support because we recognised that true change requires more than temporary relief. We’re committed to long-term transformation that addresses root causes of street life and creates genuine alternatives.
Our approach recognises that these are children who were once babies—babies who experienced the toughest of times. They were often deprived of love, comfort, and food. Many were beaten and abused until they either left their families or were thrown out. Some have families who moved away while they were out of the house, leaving them unable to reconnect.
Every member of our Mtaani family carries trauma that requires careful, patient healing. Their eyes reflect fears and pain that run deep, but with consistent care, we see transformation happening daily.
Why Your Ongoing Support Matters
Running Rafiki Mtaani costs approximately $130 AUD each day. This covers meals, staff wages, medical assistance, activities, and all the small but significant ways we show care and build community.
While we cannot remove all our family members from street life immediately—the complexities are immense—we can ensure they eat each day, that someone checks on their wellbeing, and that someone recognises their inherent worth and dignity.
Regular donations are particularly valuable because they allow us to plan confidently and maintain consistent support. When you set up a monthly donation, you become part of our extended family, receiving regular updates about the lives you’re helping transform.
Join Our Mission of Hope
Our Mtaani family’s story is one of resilience, dignity, and hope triumphing over adversity. Every day brings new opportunities to demonstrate that with proper support, any person can thrive and contribute positively to their community.
Your support changes lives—one day, one meal, one conversation at a time. Together, we’re not just addressing immediate needs; we’re building a better future for some of Kenya’s most vulnerable children and families.
Will you join us in this vital work? Whether through a one-time donation or ongoing monthly support, your contribution makes transformation possible. Every dollar invested in Rafiki Mtaani creates ripple effects of hope that extend far beyond what we can measure.
The children and families in our care have already shown us what’s possible when people believe in them. Now we’re asking you to believe alongside us, to invest in their futures, and to be part of writing new stories of hope, dignity, and transformation.
Support Rafiki Mtaani today and help us continue changing lives, one day at a time.
