It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Emily.
Emily’s story was one of extraordinary resilience. When she first came to Rafiki Mwema, she carried wounds that no child should ever have to bear. The road ahead looked uncertain and difficult. But slowly, with love, consistent care, and the dedication of our team and community, we began to witness something remarkable — Emily began to heal. She returned to school. She smiled more. She grew. She carried herself with a quiet strength that moved everyone around her, and her future, once so shadowed, began to look genuinely bright.
That is what makes this loss so unbearably painful.
In her final days, Emily was diagnosed with meningitis. The illness progressed rapidly and with devastating speed, and despite every effort made on her behalf, we lost her. A young life that had already survived so much was taken far too soon — and we are heartbroken.
A Send-Off Worthy of Her
When we put out a call to help cover the costs of Emily’s funeral arrangements — the hearse, casket, burial gown, hospital bills, and funeral home costs — you responded with extraordinary generosity and compassion. We are so deeply grateful.
On the day of her burial, Emily was laid to rest with the dignity and love she so wholly deserved.
Rafiki Mwema coordinated all arrangements and was present at every step — from the hospital, to the hearse, to carrying her casket to her final resting place. The burial service was attended by the Rafiki Mwema family, led by our Country Director, Emily’s former case investigating police officer, her family, her current school, neighbours, and friends. Together, we gathered to say goodbye to a girl who had touched so many lives.
The ceremony was deeply emotional. Those present held space for the fullness of Emily’s story — the pain she had endured, and the healing and growth that followed. Her strength was honoured. Her life was celebrated.
After she was laid to rest, the Rafiki Mwema team planted flowers and trees around her grave and throughout the compound — living memorials in her name. The service concluded with a final prayer and a group photograph beside her grave, a moment to preserve her memory and say our last goodbye together.
