At Rafiki Mwema, Employee of the Month is not about titles or visibility — it’s about heart, sacrifice, and the quiet, unwavering commitment to children’s safety, dignity, and healing. This February, we are deeply honoured to recognise Oliver, whose work embodies the very soul of our mission. Nominated and voted for by his colleagues, this award reflects one of the greatest compliments there is: the respect and trust of those who walk beside you every day.

A Steady Presence in the Most Vulnerable Moments

Oliver’s role in outreach, family tracing, and reintegration places him at the centre of some of the most complex and sensitive work we do. Time and again, he has ensured that children are not just reunited with families — but reunited safely, with dignity, preparation, and care.

Through thorough family tracing, careful pre-exit assessments, and consistent follow-ups, Oliver helps children close painful chapters and step into new ones with confidence. Many children who once stayed at Doyle Farm for extended periods — simply because their families could not be located — are now safely at home because of his determination and persistence.

His colleagues describe him as calm, reliable, deeply trusted, and profoundly compassionate. Children feel safe with him. Families feel respected. Staff know they can depend on him.

Going Beyond the Call of Duty

Oliver’s commitment regularly takes him far beyond normal working hours and well outside his comfort zone. He travels long distances across counties, often spending days away from home to trace families, escort children, and complete reintegrations.

At times, this work has required extraordinary personal sacrifice — sleeping at bus stations when travel home is not possible, leaving before dawn and returning late into the night, and stepping in wherever support is needed: from house meetings, to kitchen duties, to taking boys on nature walks when not on outreach.

One nomination shared a deeply confronting reality of Oliver’s work: despite experiencing a traumatic kidnapping incident while travelling for duty — and being dumped over 100 kilometres from home — Oliver later returned and completed his mission. His calmness, vigilance, and resilience in the face of danger remind us just how real the risks are in child protection work, and just how courageous those who carry it out must be.

Impact That Lasts

Oliver doesn’t just help children return home — he lays the foundation for long-term success. His detailed documentation, consistent reporting, and thorough understanding of each child’s family history allow teams to prepare children therapeutically for exit, reducing anxiety and increasing positive outcomes.

As a result:

  • Children respond positively to reunification because they are prepared
  • Post-exit follow-ups are smoother and more effective
  • Families feel supported rather than judged
  • Children are re-enrolled in school and supported into education
  • Street families feel included and empowered, with some children now able to read and write

His ability to gather accurate information, liaise with guardians and authorities, and secure school placements after reintegration has made an immeasurable difference to countless lives.

A Man of Integrity, Humility, and Peace

Across every nomination, one theme rings clear: Oliver is a peace-maker. He is humble, honest, organised, and deeply respected. His files are meticulous. His communication is clear. His presence brings calm. He attends boys’ project meetings faithfully, understands behavioural challenges, and contributes thoughtfully to decisions that support healing. He is jovial, warm, and approachable — equally comfortable teaching street families, supervising children, or assisting with compound maintenance.

To the children, he is trusted and fatherly.
To his colleagues, he is dependable and kind.
To Rafiki Mwema, he is a backbone of outreach and a reflection of our values in action.
