Rafiki Pen Pals
In 2014 long term friend and Rafiki Ambassador Chantelle (Aka Fat Mum Slim) started an incredibly sweet and wholesome campaign to send the children of Rafiki Mwema handwritten letters in the mail to make them see how valued they are.
We are reviving this lost art – more important now than ever in this age of digital and AI. Get involved!

Letters for my Rafiki
There is something magical about a child receiving an envelope in the mail. Coming from a real child from another part of the world, the mailbox becomes a tiny portal to the rest of the world, and a symbol of hope and possibility.
Pen pals blend old-school values with skills kids need today. A letter creates a real connection, because children are sharing their everyday lives rather than a like or an emoji. It gives them writing practice as they are writing for a genuine reader, so spelling, sentences and handwriting all start to matter more.
It brings geography to life, because every envelope has a real place behind it that can be found on a map. And for shy or reserved children, writing on paper is often far easier than speaking face-to-face, which makes letters a gentle confidence builder.
Silly Sock Day
Rock Your Socks for Rafiki
Do you love funny, crazy, silly, colourful socks? We do too!
A Silly Sock Day is such a fun and easy initiative to run at Prep, Preschools and Primary Schools – where children get to express their individual style and personality through their sock choice. It’s such a small detail but can mean a lot for confidence and connection.
The main premise is that children bring a $2 gift on Silly Sock Day that is donated to Rafiki Mwema, but we also want to connect this donation to the real situation in Kenya, so the children understand what they are giving to.
