Celebrating Michael Odero – A champion for the children

Employee of the Month – August 2026

As Rafiki Mwema’s Liaison Officer, Michael Odero’s role is clear on paper. But ask anyone at our Therapeutic Centre in Kenya, and they’ll tell you something different – Michael doesn’t see boundaries. He sees needs. And he meets them.

This month, the Rafiki Mwema team voted to recognise Michael as our Employee of the Month. It’s easy to see why.

A champion for the children

One of the things that stands out most about Michael is his commitment to the children’s education. Noticing that school-going children needed extra support with their homework after a long day, he took the initiative to organise afternoon study sessions – coordinating with available teachers to make sure every child got the guidance they needed.

The results have been remarkable. Children who once struggled to read and write are making real, measurable progress. And it happened because Michael cared enough to make it happen. When staffing was low on a Saturday, Michael didn’t hesitate. He picked up learners who’d been for tuition so they’d never be left stranded. That’s not in his job description. But that’s Michael.

A reliable bridge

Michael is the thread that connects so many parts of the Rafiki Mwema family. He ensures every child’s case history is kept with care and confidentiality, and that every new child is photographed and welcomed on their very first day.

He supports staff with ICT challenges, helps colleagues file their KRA returns, and bridges the gap between our team in Kenya and our supporters in Australia – sharing stories, strengthening relationships, and making sure the mission is always communicated clearly and powerfully.

A pillar of support

His colleagues describe him as someone you can lean on.

“He’s got a shoulder you can lean on, and he communicates with kindness and empathy,” one team member shared. “His creativity and problem-solving skills are truly impressive.”

Going above and beyond – always

What makes Michael’s story so powerful isn’t any single act. It’s the consistency. Day after day, week after week, he shows up with energy, warmth, and a genuine servant’s heart. Whether he’s out on an outreach visit checking on children who’ve returned to their communities, supervising in the boys’ house during a staff shortage, or cracking jokes in the corridor to lift the mood — Michael brings himself fully to everything he does.

As one of his nominators beautifully put it: “His work is not defined by hours or recognition, but by a genuine calling to serve.”

Congratulations, Michael
