The Child King House is ready — Built with love, and watched over by Archie
Last November, I shared a dream with you: a quiet, private house on Doyle Farm where boys arriving at Rafiki Mwema could take their very first steps towards healing.
Today, I’m so proud to tell you that the Mfalme Mtoto House — The Child King House — is finished. And it’s all thanks to the golfers, sponsors, volunteers and friends of our 4th Annual Rafiki Golf Day.
Why our boys needed this house
When a boy first comes to Rafiki Mwema, he’s often carrying far more than any child should. Many of our boys have lived through neglect, hunger, violence and life on the streets. Their first days with us matter enormously.
For his first two weeks, each new boy stays in a transition space with his own key worker beside him. It’s a gentle settling-in time. It’s also often where a boy first begins to share what he’s been through — a precious first step on his path to recovery.
Until now, that transition space was a bedroom inside the main boys’ house. As more boys have come into our care, we’ve needed that room as a bedroom. And in a busy, shared house, it was hard to give new arrivals the calm and privacy they need to open up, knowing no one else is listening.
Our boys needed a place of their own to land softly.
What you made possible
On Friday 6 February 2026, golfers gathered at Maylands Golf Course in Perth for our 4th Annual Rafiki Golf Day. Led once again by our wonderful volunteer coordinator, Áine Flannery, and her generous sponsors, the day raised an incredible AUD $84,593.
Your support has built the Mfalme Mtoto House: a detached, two-room transition house with its own bathroom and a shaded verandah, right beside the main boys’ house on Doyle Farm.

The house is now almost ready to welcome its first boys. From here, each new boy can spend his first days in this peaceful space, with his key worker close by, before he moves into the main house to join his brothers.
It also frees up a bedroom in the main house, which means we can care for more boys without compromising the quality of care every child deserves.
The Mfalme Mtoto House joins a long line of Golf Day projects on Doyle Farm, from our security fencing to our fish farm and cattle barn. Áine, and everyone who swung a club, sponsored a hole or bid on an auction item — thank you. You’ve given our boys so much more than a building. You’ve given them a safe beginning.
Archie’s place in the house
There’s one more part of this story I’d love to share with you, and it’s very close to my heart.
Archie was five years old. He had blue eyes and the widest smile, he was learning to read, and he loved dinosaurs. Sadly, he died unexpectedly at the start of this year (2026). In the middle of unimaginable grief, his mum, Sophie, asked the people who loved Archie to make donations to Rafiki Mwema in his honour.
When I was last on Doyle Farm, I sat with our boys and told them about Archie. I told them about a little boy on the other side of the world, and about his mum, who in her darkest days chose to think of them. They listened very quietly. Since then, Archie has held a very special place in their hearts.
So Archie will have a very special place in the Mfalme Mtoto House, too. A poster of Archie, with the poem Sophie shared with me, will hang on the wall inside. Every boy who arrives will see it. Archie will always be watching over them, and our boys will know that the people who loved Archie care about them, too.
Archie’s Poem
Sophie has kindly let us share Archie’s poem with you, written by a close family friend, Hannah (@rileywriter):
He was a rainbow in human form.
He showed up for 5 years of joy, kindness and little boy mischief.
Blue eyes and the widest smile, like his big sister.
He was learning to read and learning about dinosaurs and teaching his mum and dad and everyone he met about living life in technicolour.
And now on the darkest days he brightens up the sky,
Bringing glorious colour when the tears fall heavy as rain,
Because Archie, like a beautiful rainbow, was just passing through,
Painting his memory on our souls, forever.
Sophie, thank you. Thank you for sharing Archie with us, and for your kindness towards children you’ve never met.
Our boys will carry his rainbow with them.
